Burgundy’s structure is defined by five main sub-regions that span from north to south: Chablis in the north, Beaujolais to the south near Lyon, Mâconnais further south, and the two central slices, Côte d’Or and Côte Chalonnaise. Each of these areas has its own characteristic climates and grape focus, shaping the style of wines Burgundy is known for.

Loire Valley, however, sits far to the west of Burgundy along the Loire River and is its own separate wine region with distinct soils, climates, and grape varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, and Melon de Bourgogne. Because it lies outside Burgundy’s geographic and administrative boundaries, the Loire Valley is not one of Burgundy’s five large sub-regions.
